Art becomes a bet on the impossible chance with Pia Lanzinger.

Curated by Katharina Schlieben.

Turning the Point tests artistic and civic formats of exchange and cultural practice around Moritzplatz in Berlin-Kreuzberg.

The second sequence, Little Big Cha(lle)nges, presents Pia Lanzinger‘s extensive artistic practice. With her approach of addressing major social conflicts on a small scale, she has realised exemplary forms of participation in a variety of contexts and regions around the world over the past 25 years. The presentation of committed micro-political interventions in threatened milieus and marginalised cultures is intended to be understood as a proposal and reservoir for the productive solution of current macro-problems.

The question of civil participation by means of artistic and cultural practices, which is integral to Turning the Point, can thus be discussed against the background of concrete experiences in various precarious ecologies and from a broader perspective. They lead to questions that are developed in parallel through a reflective discourse programme:

How can fundamental social challenges be identified? And how can different actors be brought into a common dialogue, how can collective self-understanding and sustainable self-forming dynamics be inspired?

The parade of projects shows that particular milieus and marginalised groups, to which special attention is paid, are indeed capable of articulating themselves in a differentiated way – contrary to widespread prejudices. And if their concerns are given a public hearing, opportunities for connecting practice with the wider social environment also emerge.

The most recent project of Pia Lanzinger’s work consists of the explorations and actions that she realised in Sequence 1 of Turning the Point at Moritzplatz. What began in this context with the Stimmoffensiven Rundgänge as a prelude to KreisverChor will be further developed in Little Big Cha(lle)nges and form an additional highlight:

On Saturday, 5 July 2025, a musical parade will bring together the broad spectrum of neighbourhoods and realities of life that coexist around Moritzplatz (in a very small space) in a different way. The ‘challenge’ is to overcome social and emotional barriers by singing concise texts. The choir of statistics with Bernadette la Hengst gives additional expression to the voices on site. The KreisverChor thus embarks on the venture of becoming offensive in the mode of associative singing together with people from the neighbourhood.

Turning the Point is a project in three sequences by Katharina Schlieben, Pia Lanzinger and Sven Sappelt at CLB Berlin. Funded by the Lotto Foundation Berlin.
