MigraTouriSpace is an artistic exploration of travel as an approach to the phenomena of migration and tourism. It deals with the traveling of images, people and spaces. Spatial migration refers to migration in which spaces also migrate with people. Tourism no longer means vacation as a state of exception, but the tourist gaze that, taken home, has long since shaped what is called everyday life.

The art and research project MigraTouriSpace examines the overlaps between migration and tourism. “Migration proceeds in a similarly global way as tourism and in part even conditions each other,” says Stefanie Bürkle. After all, “changes in urban space, influenced or even caused by migration, attract tourists.”

In a multi-channel video installation, visitors will immerse themselves in spaces of which they can no longer tell where they are. Is it Korea, Germany or Vietnam? Interviews with migrants and tourists will provide insight into individual life stories and make expectations and motives of migrant and tourist movement visible. The exhibition visualizes a changing notion of being in the world, discusses conventional perceptions of tourism and migration, and poses essential questions about one’s own view of the supposedly foreign.

In times of a pandemic, traveling is hardly possible anymore. Also for this reason MigraTouriSpace comes exactly at the right time. The windows of the CLB will be completely covered with translucent photographs creating a playful dialogue between inside and outside, between the supposedly familiar and the foreign next door. If one enters the exhibition space as a passerby, one becomes a traveler oneself in a video landscape of German houses in Korea and the Vietnamese Berlin.
