Workshop exhibition on the European Balcony Project.

Opening hours: 02.03. to 16.03.2019, Tuesday to Sunday, 11.00 am to 7.00 pm, and during events.

In November 1918, at the end of the First World War, the Republic was proclaimed in Germany. One hundred years later – based on a manifesto by Ulrike Guérot and Robert Menasse – performances, discussions and readings on the future of Europe took place across Europe on November 10, 2018 under the title “The European Balcony Project.” This manifesto calls for a common European democracy that unites citizens in Europe according to the general principle of political equality – a European Republic.

More than 200 theaters and cultural institutions in Europe participated in this simultaneous proclamation, and about 40,000 people attended the event. The actions took many forms – from a proclamation at the gate of Brussels airport, to readings on a Chemnitz panel building, the red city hall in Berlin and on the beach in Lampedusa. Large theaters such as the NT Gent, the Burgtheater in Vienna and the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg participated, and numerous citizens’ groups and private individuals joined the action. Over 150 media outlets reported, such as Süddeutsche, Deutsche Welle and ZDF heute.

A selection of the material produced during this proclamation of the European Republic will be presented at CLB Berlin in Aufbau Haus in March 2019. This will reveal the range and breadth of the initiated debate: In addition to visually powerful declarations of support for Europe, the positions of critics and opponents will also be included. What idea of the future of Europe materializes in the photos, videos and texts? The exhibition brings together a European narrative told by citizens all over Europe. The artifacts from the Balcony Project thus arise from a real and present discourse about Europe, but at the same time imagine possible futures for Europe and point to spaces of possibility.
