Contemporary Art - Science - Urbanism - Digital Culture

An installative art project by Sam Auinger, Georg Spehr and Hannes Strobl
in collaboration with CLB Berlin.

The A100 runs through the middle of Berlin and connects the districts of Neukölln, Tempelhof-Schöneberg, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and Mitte in a southwestern arc. To the east, in the direction of Treptow, another section is currently under construction. Originally planned as a beltway, the first section was built in 1958 in the emerging zeitgeist of the “car-friendly modern city”.

Today, the A100 is not only a spatially expansive infrastructure system, but a city-building force with great physical, media and political presence. It generates a pulse for urban life and shapes Berlin’s identity as a symbol of progress, self-dramatization and representation as well as a hate object, disruptive factor and art space.

The exhibition at CLB Berlin touches on cultural-historical, urbanistic and political aspects of the A100. The design with its central sound installation is committed to the auditory dimension of the urban highway that can be experienced today and thus becomes the starting point for a current urban planning and mobility debate. In accompanying talks, sound-walks and screenings, we will critically discuss questions concerning the present and future of the urban freeway.

Sponsored by
Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Europe and the Austrian Cultural Forum Berlin.

The project forms CLB Berlin’s official contribution to the Performing Arts Festival Berlin 2018 as well as to the “make city berlin – Festival für Architektur & Andersmachen” 2018.
