ARTPORT_making waves and CLB Berlin cordially invite you to celebrate the publication of the book WE ARE OCEAN Berlin+Brandenburg.

Berlin is by the sea. And not just in our hearts. Critically experiencing the existential entanglement of land and water, city and sea, nature and culture is one of the fundamental concerns of the global WE ARE OCEAN project. The BERLIN+BRANDENBURG edition brought together artists, scientists, politicians, curators and, last but not least, students and teachers to exchange views on the fundamental importance of the ocean in the context of climate change.

The book of the same name brings together the experiences of the students as well as new texts by Antje Boetius, Stefanie Hessler, T. J. Demos, Francesca Santoro, Julia Moritz, Lisa Rave and Anne-Marie Melster. It shows different approaches to raising awareness about the threatening situation of the ocean and to changing our behaviour.

We are pleased to present the book now and to return to CLB Berlin for this occasion with an exciting programme: Anne-Marie Melster will welcome you and introduce the project; the former UN spokesperson for the Paris Climate Agreement 2015 and a member of our advisory board Nick Nuttall will perform from his brand new album Just Because Some Bad Wind Blows; ARTPORT_making waves Botswana curator Elang Basadi will visually stage the book for this evening; and author and project curator Julia Moritz will run a bar.

WE ARE OCEAN is supported by UNESCO as part of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-30). The first iteration BERLIN+BRANDENBURG started in 2019 in collaboration with Futurium, CLB and State Studio as well as the Marine Regions Forum and the schools “Schule am Berlinickeplatz” in Berlin, “Montessori Schule Niederbarnim” in Brandenburg and “Barbara-Zürner-Oberschule Velten” in Brandenburg.

ARTPORT_making waves (founded in 2006 by Anne-Marie Melster and Corinne Erni) is an international interdisciplinary art organisation dedicated to collaborative education programmes, residencies, exhibitions and film projects about the meaning of the ocean and its ecological crisis.
